WHAT DOES THIS POLICY DO?

This policy describes how Dot Eco will distribute the most valuable names, protect trademark owners, and handle controversial names.

BACKGROUND

Some names are more valuable than others. For example, with Dot Eco we expect a lot of people will want to own names like www.energy.eco or www.food.eco.

Usually, these more valuable names are auctioned for cash to the highest bidder. In the case of Dot Eco, this presents a problem, as the most valuable (or sustainable) use of a name might not be proposed by the wealthiest organization or individual.

Therefore, we need a better system. A ‘use-plan’ competition is one possibility that will open up access to premium names.

Other names, like ‘coal’ or ‘suv’ might have no place in the Dot Eco universe. Perhaps even some companies could be deemed too polluting to qualify for a Dot Eco name. Before we create a list of these controversial names, however, we’ll need to figure how to create that list.

Some trademark owners are concerned that new domains like Dot Eco might not protect their rights. We believe it is critical that we act as a responsible registry and proactively protect the rights of trademark owners. This policy enshrines that belief.

THE BIG QUESTIONS

  1. We are currently thinking about allocating some of the best Dot Eco names for free using a global ‘use-plan’ competition. Do you think that’s a good idea? If not, how can we make sure our community gets the most benefit from these names?
  2. Some names or phrases and indeed some companies, clearly just aren’t eco-friendly. If we were going to create a list of those names, how would we do it? What would you put on it? Should we do it?
  3. What are some innovative ways that we can reduce costs for and protect the interests of trademark owners?

The entire policy is open for feedback and debate. We have included the above questions as thought starters. You can respond below.

Your responses will be aggregated by the Meridian Institute and reported to the Dot Eco Stakeholder Council for consideration before being reviewed by Big Room and integrated into a third draft policy.
