Governing Principles (Second Draft)

This policy has been reviewed and updated. View the archived policy.

WHAT DOES THIS POLICY DO?

This policy is the foundation of Dot Eco. These governing principles will define how we, as Big Room Inc. will run Dot Eco responsibly. Also, when you buy a Dot Eco domain, you will agree to abide by these principles and act as a responsible member of the Dot Eco Community.

BACKGROUND

What are the core values and beliefs of the eco-community? This large, global, community often disagrees on many things, but we all share some common values.

This policy attempts to identify those values, for both Big Room Inc. as the company that will run Dot Eco and for the people who will use Dot Eco domain names and profiles.

It links those values with how we run Dot Eco and/or use Dot Eco names. Most importantly, the Dot Eco Governing Principles say to the world: this is what our community stands for.

THE BIG QUESTIONS

  1. We think that the word ‘eco’ combines the concepts of ‘ecology’ and ‘economy’. That’s why we’ve proposed ‘sustainable development’ as a core principle for Dot Eco. Do you agree? If not, what do you think would be better?
  2. We’ve developed a fairly in-depth series of commitments that we plan to make to the Dot Eco Community if we win the rights to run Dot Eco. Is this good enough, or can we do better?
  3. In addition to our own commitments, we’re asking people who buy Dot Eco domains to be a part of the Dot Eco Community. That means they have to agree to support sustainable development, and to be responsible and active members. Is that the right approach?
  4. If we identify people who are clearly violating these principles, should we take away their Dot Eco name or names?

The entire policy is open for feedback and debate. We have included the above questions as thought starters. You can respond below.

Your responses will be aggregated by the Meridian Institute and reported to the Dot Eco Stakeholder Council for consideration before being reviewed by Big Room and integrated into a third draft policy.
