WHAT DOES THIS POLICY DO?
This policy describes the principles that will form the charter of the Dot Eco Foundation. The charter will define the source of funds, how they are allocated and to what causes and/or organisations.

BACKGROUND
Sales and renewals of Dot Eco domain names could generate millions of dollars yearly for environmental and social causes around the world.
It is critical that those funds are distributed globally and equitably to address some of the world’s most pressing environmental and social challenges.
To do this, we propose creating an independent Foundation financed from the sales from Dot Eco names. The Foundation will use these funds to:
- Address sustainable development challenges
- Encourage environmental and social entrepreneurship
- Expand Internet and information accessibility
- Reduce the environmental footprint of information technology and the Internet
- Build the capacity of environmental and social standards bodies, especially in developing countries.
THE BIG QUESTIONS
- We’ve talked about donating 25% of revenue (or sales) of Dot Eco names. Is this the right approach and portion? What are some alternatives?
- Have we identified the right priorities for the Dot Eco Foundation?
- Would a user-directed model, where Dot Eco domain owners have a say in how funds are distributed, be a good idea?
The entire policy is open for feedback and debate. We have included the above questions as thought starters. You can respond below.
Your responses will be aggregated by the Meridian Institute and reported to the Dot Eco Stakeholder Council for consideration before being reviewed by Big Room and integrated into a third draft policy.
