This policy has been reviewed and updated. View the archived policy.

WHAT DOES THIS POLICY DO?

This policy describes how eco-profiles are created, what types of profile will exist, what types of questions will be asked, how we add and remove questions, and how responses can be updated.

BACKGROUND

When you buy a Dot Eco domain you will be asked to create an ‘eco-profile’ before your domain is activated.

These eco-profiles will differ depending on whether you want to create a website for a small or large company or organisation, for your own general use, or for an eco-friendly product or service.

Each of these types of eco-profile will have their own set of questions. Some questions will be mandatory and some voluntary. The responses to these questions will form your website’s eco-profile. They are meant to be flexible and could be simple or more complicated depending on the outcomes of this consultation process.

Every Dot Eco website’s eco-profile will be public and searchable. They will be linked to the website using its unique domain name, and searchable through a large, open database.

THE BIG QUESTIONS

  1. We are currently considering five eco-profile types. Do they look right to you? Are any types missing, or would you remove any?
    1. Individual/Personal
    2. Large & Medium-Sized Company (defined as companies with more than 50 employees)
    3. Small Company (defined as companies with less than 50 employees)
    4. Non-Profit/Non-Governmental Organization/Co-op or Government
    5. Products or Services
  2. Given that our understanding of environmental and social issues changes over time, do you think it’s a good idea to set up an independent committee to review and decide how the eco-profile questions should evolve? If so, how often should the committee review?
  3. This policy currently allows you to select an independent third party auditor to verify that your responses are accurate. We think larger companies in particular will want to do this. Do you think this is a good idea? If so, should there be a list of pre-approved auditors?

The entire policy is open for feedback and debate. We have included the above questions as thought starters. You can respond below.

Your responses will be aggregated by the Meridian Institute and reported to the Dot Eco Stakeholder Council for consideration before being reviewed by Big Room and integrated into a third draft policy.

But then who would choose, approve or audit the auditors?
