BACKGROUND: WWW.WECAREABOUT.ECO

Dot Eco (as in www.example.eco) is a domain name ending. It doesn't exist yet, but one day it will. When it does, millions of companies and people around the world are going to buy dot eco domain names and use them to claim that they are 'green' or 'eco-friendly'.

That's a huge opportunity, and a huge challenge. Why? Because people are confused about what makes something green. A recent UK study showed a whopping 70% of consumers have a hard time identifying green companies.

At the same time, more than ever, those companies want to prove they are green. They want to create green jobs, sell green products to aware consumers, and feel good about their work.

That's where dot eco comes in. We can use dot eco domain names to match up those green consumers with green companies quickly and easily. A simple 'eco' tag on every green website, email and business card could say it all.

WALKING THE TALK: CALCULATE, SHARE & REDUCE

The time for talk is past. These days, people are looking for action.

That's why it's not going to be so easy to get a dot eco domain. You're going to have to walk the talk. That means calculating your eco-footprint - your environmental impact - posting it online, and linking it to your .eco website - See how dot eco will work.

Whether you're a Fortune 500 company with a strong responsible record, a Cambodian furniture manufacturer using sustainable timber, a corner store owner in Vancouver calculating food miles for your customers, or a green blogger in Sao Paolo on a mission to expand public transit, if you are part of .eco, you will need to show you care about your environmental impact enough to calculate it, make it public, and reduce it.

Think about it. Who gets a .eco? When can names be taken down? Are we going to allow www.coal.eco? Where do the profits go? These are the real and core questions behind .eco. These are the questions we first asked ourselves when we began work on .eco in 2007. Back then, it was just an idea, a vision for a solution to the confusion.

Now, dot eco is more than an idea, it is a global debate about what it means to be green.

This website is filled with opportunities to comment on dot eco. Explore, learn and above all, join the conversation. Now is the time to make dot eco work.

Now is the time to stand up for standards, innovation, and getting green done.
